ZIFA CENTRAL Soccer League (CSL) returnees, Border Strikers stretched their unbeaten run to five matches following a 3-1 routing of former premiership outfit, Gweru United at Dulibadzimu Stadium in Beitbridge over the weekend.
A brace by David Pito and a Shelton Mazunga solitary strike ensured that the border town outfit collected maximum points. Exciting striker Blessing Sibanda found the consolation goal for Gweru United.
The result has seen the “Vavheneki” powering to second position on the log with 11 points and are only separated through an inferior goal difference from log leaders ZPC Munyati who were held to a two all draw by Vumbachikwe.
Strikers coach, Never Malunga said his team’s plan is to ensure that they collect maximum points in each game as the Beitbridge side seeks their maiden promotion into the topflight league.
“I’m happy with the way we’ve played so far and winning against Gweru United is part of our objective of winning each game we play. Well see how it goes at the end of the season as we seek to gain promotion,” said the former Dynamos defender.
His counterpart, Peter Manoti, who was making his first trip to the border town since he left the now defunct former premiership side Tripple B in 2013, blamed the defeat on bungled travel arrangements.
“My boys weren’t in the right frame of mind to play that game as we travelled on Saturday and by the time we got into Beitbridge in the evening we couldn’t find accommodation and slept in the bus. That on its own took its toll on the players,” said the experienced mentor who has also taken charge of Gweru Pirates and the now defunct Zimalloys.
In other matches, Shabanie Mine were held to a goalless draw away at Blanket Mine while Sable Chemicals edged Ivan Hoe one nil in a Kwekwe derby.
Army side, Tongogara walked over Mvuma Stars three nil as the latter are still to pay their full affiliation fees.
