The Department of Immigration has dismissed claims by some sections of the media that there was an influx of Zimbabweans based in South Africa trooping back to the country ahead of the harmonised elections tomorrow.Last week some online media were awash with news that Zimbabweans based in south Africa who are commonly referred to as Injiva were coming back to vote.
Assistant regional immigration officer in charge of southern region Mr Charles Gwede yesterday said they had recorded a decrease in traffic on either sides of the border recently.
He said they were clearing about 6 000 people a day as compared to the usual 15 000 to 20 000 during peak times.
Beitbridge Border Post is one of the busiest inland ports in Sub-Saharan Africa where an average of 10 000 access it daily.
The number rises to 25 000 during peak times and the festive season.
“Actually we have started noting a decrease in human traffic at the border where we are attending to around 6 000 people per day.
“The largest number of travellers come on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, though nothing much has been happening as of now.
“The volume of traffic increases during holidays and month-ends. At the moment we are seeing the normal movement of traffic,” said Mr Gwede.
