The congestion at Forbes Border Post in Mutare is expected to continue up to next week owing to the installation of an automatic high speed boom barrier.
The work has seen a temporary constriction of traffic at the post, hence the congestion and delays.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) said the installation of the automatic high speed boom barrier has resulted in closure of some lanes as well as reduction of working and parking space.
On completion, the automatic high speed boom barrier installation is expected to enhance efficiency in traffic management at the border.
“The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority wishes to advise all travellers, importers and exporters, transporters, clearing agents and the general public that due to the ongoing installation works of the automatic high rapid speed boom barrier at Forbes Border Post, traffic handling capacity has significantly been impacted,” said Zimra.
“This has resulted in the closure of some east bound traffic lanes, and reduction of working and parking space. The reduction in capacity has resulted in some delays in the effective passage of all traffic both out-bound and inbound. The delays are projected to last for the next 10 days, during which period the installation work is expected to be completed.”
Zimra has called on stakeholders to engage it through its communication channels in the event of challenges during the period.
“The authority regrets any inconvenience caused to all its clients transacting through the Forbes Border Post, nonetheless we believe this project is necessary and will go a long way in creating efficient and effective traffic management for all stakeholders,” Zimra said.
“Zimra remains committed to minimising any delays that may be experienced.”
