Bulawayo musical group, Born Free Crew won President Mugabe’s approval when they performed at the Zanu-PF congress in Chinhoyi last week, getting the party into a celebratory mood with its victory song title Pemberera/Jabulani. The song was released after Zanu-PF’s resounding victory in this year’s harmonised elections.

After performing, the Born Free Crew (Bulawayo) was invited back to the podium where President Mugabe praised them for coming up with the vibrant victory song.

The crew will be going to State House on a date to be announced after the First Lady, Amai Grace Mugabe invited them.
In an interview, the spokesperson of Bulawayo Born Free Crew Sithabile Ncube said the group was thrilled that President Mugabe and Zanu-PF loved their song.

“The song has been doing well both on radio and TV and we are happy the party’s top brass loved it when we performed in Chinhoyi. It was really an honour to be called back by the President and get all the praise he showered on us,” she said.

Ncube said they had a number of projects in the pipe line which are being hindered by the unavailability of sponsorship.
“We want to record a birthday song for the President but for now we have shelved the project as we do not have money to record.

“Again we have a song we have written for Bona Mugabe which we want to be out before her wedding but we are facing financial challenges with recording it,” she said.

The group has three members: Joshua Thulani Chakavanda and sisters Sithabile and Thembelani Ncube.
Ncube invited youths to join the Born Free Crew.

“We call upon all Zanu-PF youths with a passion for singing to come and join us. We want the group to grow big with diverse personalities.
“We are not doing this for the money but for our party,” she said.

Thabi, as Sithabile is popularly known in the music circles said the song was nominated for the NAMAs.
“The song got a NAMA recognition and now has been honoured by the President, this encourages us in our musical endeavours. We will be adding new members to the group but only the serious ones will be allowed to join,” she said.

The group is already working on a collaboration with Born Free Crew (Harare) on a song titled Komborerai Zimbabwe, which will be out by early next year. Born Free Crew (Harare) has done a number of songs and is already an established name on the music scene. Some of their songs include Gushungo, Nguva YeRhodesia and Ndarangarira Magamba.

Thabi said fans should expect a different type of music from the one of Born Free Crew (Harare).
“This is different group from the Harare Crew and we will not be doing the same style. We want to have our own identity,” she said.
