educational systems are also improving each day and every parent’s dream to give their children the exposure that comes with an evolving globe. Well, out of the five pupils selected on the Help Us and Help Ourselves Scholarship Foundation, only three qualified for the scheme.
The other two dropped out due to personal reasons.
The pupils were part of the scholarship scheme which was being co-sponsored by Borrowdale Brooke Academy in conjunction with local gospel hip-hop/rapper, Mudiwa Mtandwa.
The three pupils — Lloyd Gatsi of Hatcliffe, Tariro Magorimbo of Seke and Simba Chikeruhutamahave from Mbare — have already enrolled at Borrowdale Brooke Academy.
Speaking at the scholarship hand-over ceremony held at the school, BBA chief executive officer and chairman Ian Henney said the scholarships were awarded to pupils who had obtained four units but could not afford to go to high school.
The beneficiaries will enrol from Form One until Advanced Level and everything will be catered for.
“The scheme started last year and pupils were required to submit their Grade Seven results including their second term reports and a letter stating why he or she needs the scholarship. The entries were submitted to Cool Lifestyle and we selected only five interviews,” he said.
Mr Henney said the initiative will go a long way in assisting the less privileged and this is just the beginning.
“It has become painfully obvious that without societal contributions, these children are prone to dropping out of school and indulge in anti-social behaviour to the detriment of not only themselves but also the nation as a whole,” said Mr Henney.
Mr Henney said the assistance was meant to help bright pupils who are not able to pay for their secondary education. He said both boy and girls were considered for the scholarships.
Mr Henney later hailed The Herald for coming up the Cool Lifestyle initiative.
“I was surprised to hear about Cool Lifestyle from my niece. On behalf of other schools, I applaud the great job of coming up with such a noble idea as the mini-Herald newspaper with children’s news, sports, entertainment and academic issues. The teen newspaper is fast becoming a favourite for every pupil in the country,” he said.
Mr Henney said the school has vowed to produce cool writers.
Gatsi said he was happy to have been selected as one of the beneficiaries of the scheme.
“I feel honoured, privileged and blessed. The scholarship will go a long way in developing my education and I promise to do my best,” he said.
Tariro also took time to thank Mr Henney and Mudiwa for the noble gesture. “Thank you all for the scholarship fund. I am an orphan and I am happy and out of words,” she said.
Coincidentally, Tariro was picked from Mudiwa’s former school Seke 6 Primary School, after obtaining four units at Grade Seven.
Borrowdale Brooke Academy opened its doors in January 2010.
The school is situated 8km from the city centre, and has now more than 100 students and 15 teachers.
