THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has commended Highlanders for their progressive impact on youth development, community engagement and social cohesion, as the club formally stepped into its centenary celebrations.
The remarks were delivered by SRC board member David Simba at the official public launch of the club’s 100-year celebrations at the Bosso Clubhouse on Monday afternoon, a gathering that brought together football, culture and civic leadership.
“On the momentous occasion of Highlanders Football Club’s 100 year anniversary, the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) extends heartfelt congratulations and solidarity to the club, its supporters, and the entire Bulawayo and Matabeleland community.

“Highlanders’ commitment to nurturing talent and promoting inclusivity is a shining example for Zimbabwean sports,” said Simba.
He added, “As Highlanders continues to make waves in African football, the SRC re-affirms its support for the club’s vision and mission.
“We’re proud to call you a partner in Zimbabwe’s sporting journey. Here’s to many more years of footballing excellence, growth and triumph.
“We commend Highlanders for inspiring generations of players, fans and communities. Your legacy extends far and wide, and we’re honoured to partner with you in promoting sport and recreation.”
The SRC hailed Bosso as a key contributor to football development in the country.

“As a cornerstone of Zimbabwean football, Highlanders’ century-long contribution to the sport is a testament to passion, dedication and excellence.”
The occasion was attended by a number of people, many of whom are the team’s faithful fans.
Also in attendance was the Deputy Mayor of the city of Bulawayo, Councillor Edwin Ndlovu, who delivered Mayor David Coltart’s solidarity message, saying the club embodies a long held culture of fusing sport in moulding a community that has thrived to excel, unite and develop humanity.

Other notable figures in football who were at the function included members of the board and executive, celebrated artist Albert Nyathi, club great Silas Ndlovu, club manager Amin Soma-Phiri, club greats Douglas Mloyi, Gift Lunga (Snr), Melusi Sibanda and local businessman Jabulani Nkomo among others.
The Premier Soccer League chief executive Rodwell Thabe was also in attendance.
Proceedings were marked by entertainment from various musical groups.
