BULAWAYO giants Highlanders principal sponsors, BancABC are reportedly contemplating introducing a new away kit for the team in line with world trends, Chronicle Sport has learnt.

News from very impeccable sources revealed that the traditionally black and white clad 2006 league champions, could have an all red or pink away kit as from the 2014 league season unless they drop their sponsors BancABC.

“While it has not been finalised as yet, it’s almost a done deal that Highlanders’ away kit could change next year in line with worldwide sponsorship arrangements. Sponsors want the team to be clad in a completely different away colour and from the look of things the team might wear red or pink,” said the source.

He said for this year, the Peter Dube led executive fought hard and won the battle for Highlanders to continue wearing an all white away kit.

Dube while not disputing the stance by their sponsors, said nothing official was communicated to them.

“Nothing official has been communicated to us but if there are new trends in the industry maybe one day we may find ourselves in that situation but for now Highlanders’ traditional and cultural colours are still in place. We discussed with our sponsors in the sense that it is commonly accepted that we use black and white colours and that position has not changed,” said Dube.

It has become the trend in the latest sponsorship deals in sport where sponsors are now becoming more and more involved in the way teams or individuals now dress and in South Africa, Absa Premiership giants Orlando Pirates have in recent years been using an all red away kit as part of the arrangements with their principal sponsors.

With their firm traditional and cultural beliefs, Highlanders might find themselves at serious loggerheads with their fans if sponsors win the battle to introduce a new kit.

The club however changed from red to the zebra colours in 1937.
Efforts to get a comment from the BancABC marketing manager Muriel Dowa were fruitless as her mobile phone was not reachable.
