HIGHLANDERS have cleared US$57 000 in outstanding player bonuses and signing on fees, settling debts from the 2023 and 2024 seasons, thanks to the first tranche of funds from businessman, Wicknell Chivayo.
The payment, confirmed by Jabulani Nkomo, curator of Chivayo’s financial support to the club, marks a significant step in Bosso’s ongoing rebuild.
“We’re here to make Bosso a better team. Everything we do must align with Chivayo’s vision for the club and use his donation wisely,” Nkomo said. “One million dollars is a lot of money. We’ve taken the first step by clearing US$57 000 in winning bonuses. That’s done. From here, we’ll keep updating on the progress.”
Beyond the financial relief for players and technical staff, Nkomo revealed that work will finally begin on the long promised perimeter wall around the Highlanders clubhouse, an 800 metre, three metre high structure first proposed years ago during the tenure of the late CEO, Ndumiso Gumede.
“Years ago, when Gumede was still alive, we agreed on building this wall. Unfortunately, the project stalled due to lack of funds. But now, with this injection, it’s back on track,” Nkomo said. “Some of the blocks were already there, some are mine, some belong to chairman Kenneth Mhlophe. When I told him I wanted to finish the project and would seek Chivayo’s help, he gave me the green light. Now, we’re getting support not just for the wall, but for the club’s wider vision.”
Nkomo also stressed that the money will be managed transparently.
“I don’t have the money myself and I’m not keeping it. We’ve opened a trust account. I don’t even sign, my role is to authorise requests. Accountants and lawyers trusted by Chivayo are handling everything.”
Club chairman Mhlophe appeared relieved.
“I’ve always said this, Nkomo wanted to build the durawall and approached Sir Chivayo. He didn’t just offer money for the wall, he pledged to support the club. I’m grateful to both of them,” said Mhlophe.
On the football front, interim head coach Try Ncube, said the gesture would lift morale in the camp.
“We’re grateful to Chivayo. I’m sure this will motivate the boys to give their best on the pitch.”
Assistant coach Agent Sawu echoed the feeling.
“If the players are motivated, the results will come. We’re thankful for this gesture.”
Veteran goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda also weighed in.
“First, I want to thank the club, without it, we wouldn’t be here. I’d also like to thank Chivayo and Nkomo. The boys are really motivated now. We’d love for Sir Chivayo to come watch us at Barbourfields sometime and see how we play.”
Chivayo’s US$1 million sponsorship, first announced on social media, includes an upfront injection of US$250 000. The rest will be disbursed in stages over the next 12 months.
Dedicated to the memory of the late Vice President John Landa Nkomo, Chivayo’s uncle and a lifelong Bosso fan, the funding is meant to elevate the club on and off the pitch.
Highlanders, buoyed by the cash boost, host GreenFuel this Sunday at Barbourfields Stadium.
