A potential final on foreign land looms for the country’s two biggest sides Highlanders and Dynamos after they were separated during the draw of the inaugural Supa Power four team tournament in Francistown, Botswana yesterday.
In the draw conducted at the Blue Jacket Plaza Parking Space in Francistown yesterday, Highlanders were drawn to face Botswana’s Mochudi Centre Chiefs while their Harare rivals Dynamos will take on Tafic with the winners coming head to head in the final slated for August 19 at the 26 000 seater Francistown Sports Complex Stadium.
Set to be run on the same lines as South Africa’s Carling Black Label featuring Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, fans of the four teams will select the 29 participating players for each side who will be given an appearance fee of P5 000 each.
According to acting Highlanders chairman Modern Ngwenya who represented the club yesterday, the sponsors promised to deposit the money two weeks before the finals.
“We are grateful and appreciate the invitation, however a deposit into our account is what is going to bring happiness to our players,” said Ngwenya.
The main aim of the tournament is to raise funds for the development of a sports academy in Mochudi, Dinkgwana Ward.
The organiser of the tournament, Joy Setchedi of Joy Foundation told the Botswana media recently that her foundation has acquired a piece of land measuring 5.6 hectares, which will be developed into a multi-facet sports facility for nurturing both the boy and girl child.
The many Zimbabweans based in Botswana might be provided with a rare opportunity to watch the country’s biggest sides clashing on foreign soil.
