PETER Dube yesterday confirmed that he would be seeking re-election as Highlanders FC chairman. The club’s elections are set for February 1, a week after the club’s annual general meeting. Dube is one of two candidates already confirmed in the race for the hottest seat at Bosso with the other being Ernest Sibanda.
“I can confirm that I will be contesting for the chairman’s post in the coming elections,” he said
Dube said he would not comment much on the elections as the voters would decide.
“I cannot comment much on the election, I will leave the election process to the Highlanders loyalists who will do the voting, I am confident that the electorate has the club’s interest at heart and will choose a chairman who will work to get the best for the club and not for personal benefit,” said Dube.
Dube said the club had done well in the past years except for the last half of the 2014 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.
“I think the club has been doing well for the great part of my term except for the last half of the 2014 Castle Lager season, when we experienced some challenges but we learnt from that experience and I do not foresee it happening again,” he said.
Dube said people should not contest for posts for their personal gain but for the benefit of the club.
“I do not believe in contesting for my own personal gain, I am doing it for the benefit of the club and united as bona fide members and supporters of Highlanders we should aim for club development not personal gain while our beloved team suffers,” said Dube.
He called on those with influence to desist from negative media statements that harm the reputation of the club.
“There are those who deem themselves as mouthpieces, they are the ones that contribute to the negative publicity of the club which reflects badly on our sponsors.
“That does not benefit the club or gain them respect but it also shows the true nature of their intentions towards the club,” he said.
Dube said people should put personal differences aside and focus on building the club.
“Some have ambitions and think that they can achieve them by being part of the executive, but it would be wise to put personal feelings from the past aside and build our club than to fight against each other.
“I’m not worried and will not respond to faceless critics about my term and service to the club, if they have anything to say they should approach me for answers not taking their grievances to people who do not have answers.”
Dube said he believed the club had the potential to get back to the top with a unity of purpose that is people and success driven.
In his tenure at Highlanders, Dube has won the Independence, BP League, Cosmos Cellular, Castle Lager and Mbada Diamonds cups.
