IN the end, Highlanders and Chicken Inn shared the spoils in a goalless draw at Barbourfields yesterday.
The draw came on a day Chicken Inn goalkeeper Donovan Bernard probably had his “last supper” in Gamecocks colours.
Bernard is expected to join South Africa’s first Division side Kruger United.
“All I can say is that Donovan Bernard is on the move. It was probably one of his last games in our team colours,” said Chicken Inn secretary general Tavengwa Hara.
Gamecocks gaffer Joey Antipas said if the goal minder’s intended move gets to materialise, they will certainly miss him.
“Donovan has done well in-between the sticks for a couple of seasons, If he is going, we will really miss him. He has been a fantastic player who has played for the Chicken Inn badge,” said Antipas after the first instalment of the Bulawayo derby that did not live up to its expectations.
“We take the one point but playing three games a week is not easy. It was a fair result in a very tactical game. But there was no (push) from both teams to win the match. Three games in one week tend to get taxing for the players,” said Antipas. His sentiments were echoed by his opposite number Kelvin Kaindu.
“I feel we have dropped two crucial points but playing three games in seven days is taxing. There was no intensity, no flair in this match. However, a point is always better than to lose,” said Kaindu. The first half saw both sides create numerous chances but failing to find the back of the net while the second stanza was a dull affair. The home side Highlanders had the first chance of the match in the fifth minute when Mvelo Khoza’s brilliant dipping shot was tipped over the bar for a corner kick by Bernard.
