A potential tug-of-war is looming between Highlanders and How Mine over midfielder Peter “Rio” Moyo as both clubs are targeting him for next season.
Moyo started training with Highlanders last week after having tried his luck at How Mine where he was informed he would be considered for next season.

He was hoping to land a deal at Highlanders but was also notified that his former club had already registered enough players for this season.

Highlanders chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede pointed out that the midfielder was free to train with Highlanders and the technical team will make a decision on him for next season.

“The situation with him is that we are fully subscribed, he can continue training with the team as he likes, the more the merrier but chances of him being registered this season are zero.

“We were not even his first choice he first went to How Mine, we never tried to find out anything about his situation there because we are fully subscribed. It is up to the technical team if they want him for next season,’’ said Gumede.

How Mine chairman Paul McAndrew was surprised to that hear Moyo was now fine tuning at Highlanders as he was in their plans for next season.

McAndrew disclosed that they actually wanted to register Moyo during the mid season transfer window but there were a few hiccups which prevented them from doing so.

“We want him for next season, he is in our plans for next season, we wanted to register him but things didn’t work our way.

We would have wanted to have him, he has been training with us all along, the coach was impressed by him, by January he will be ours. If they (Highlanders) want him and they grab him from us its football, there is nothing we can do about it,’’ said McAndrew.

The 28-year old former Warriors midfielder left Highlanders to join Mpumalanga Black Aces in July 2014 after two brilliant seasons at Bosso in 2012 and 2013.

He was one of the scorers when Bosso beat How Mine 3-0 in the 2013 Mbada Diamonds Cup final. His stay was not long at Aces as a hip injury saw him sidelined and when he recovered he signed for Witbank Spurs in February 2015 where he was until his contract expired which made him a free agent as from July this year.

Moyo is one of the four local players who joined South African clubs at the conclusion of the 2014 African Nations Championship held in the neighbouring country who have since returned home. Others who have since returned home are Partson Jaure, Milton Ncube and Simba Sithole.
