Football and darts are the only remaining sporting disciplines at Highlanders.
“We should revive the association because it kept us strong and united. Right now people seem to be under the impression that football is the only thing at Highlanders yet there used to be many sporting disciplines,” said Raerburn Ndebele who used to coach the volleyball teams and is now at Emakhandeni Pirates.
Under the sports association, the club had disciplines like athletics, karate, football, darts, volleyball, netball, basketball, tennis, boxing and girls soccer. The association’s last executive was led by Ntando Gumede with Nivathi Songo as his deputy while Jimmy Ncube was the secretary.
Ndebele said in the past the Highlanders awards night was for all sporting disciplines unlike now when it is just for rewarding soccer players.
Contacted for comment, Highlanders board of directors’ secretary Jimmy Ncube said fully supported the idea of reviving the association.
“It just died like that but I see no reason why it can not be revived.
“We definitely need it and if members bring it up then it will be discussed,” said Ncube.
Former Highlanders vice-chairman, Elkanah Dube, who once sat in the sports association committee, said the whole idea was to cater for many sporting disciplines instead of just soccer.
He also called for members to seriously consider reviving the sports association.
