STILL licking their wounds after last weekend’s shock home defeat to PSL newboys MWOS, Highlanders head to Gweru this afternoon, desperate to right their course against a troubled Kwekwe United.
It’s been a rough few weeks for Bosso, culminating in the departure of head coach Kelvin Kaindu. But if Highlanders have had it bad, Kwekwe United’s situation borders on dire.
The City of Gold outfit, rooted to the bottom of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League table with just eight points from 18 matches, are in a freefall. Players are reportedly going unpaid, and word from the camp suggests club owner Phil Makekera wants out, citing family commitments.
With the turmoil off the field mirrored by chaos on it, the club’s future in the top flight already looks under serious threat.
Highlanders, meanwhile, sit ninth on 23 points, boasting a modest 43 percent success rate from eight wins, five draws, and as many losses.
Last week, under interim coach Try Ncube, Bosso showed signs of improvement, even if the result didn’t go their way.
In his dugout debut, Ncube’s side produced some promising football but were undone by a late sucker punch from Lloyd “Samaita” Mutasa’s MWOS.
Now, he’s calling for more of the same, minus the misfiring up front.
“The idea is to try and maintain the momentum we had last weekend,” said Ncube. “We need that same attitude from our players. We pray and hope the boys will come to the party. Our handicap has been our forward line, but we’ll try to rise to the occasion. We’ll go there and try to get maximum points.”
Bosso will be without three key men this afternoon, goalkeeper Raphael Pitisi, diminutive midfielder Junior Mafios Chihweta and defender Malvin Hativagoni, all sidelined by injury.
Elsewhere today, an intriguing battle is on the cards at Rufaro, where Scottland FC take on former champions CAPS United, who appear to be turning a corner under 45-year-old Zambian coach Ian Bakala.
