THE Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association have, with immediate effect, changed their name to Zimbabwe Boxing Federation in line with the international mother body’s requirements. The development comes after the International Boxing Association ordered their affiliates to drop the word amateur on their names as they were no longer focusing on amateur boxing only.
The resolution was made in 2010 and the national mother body applied for the change of name last year to the Sports Commission.
They also submitted amendments that need to be made on their constitution for it to be in line with AIBA.
ZBF secretary-general, Goodwill Sibanda, revealed yesterday that their application has been approved as well as their amended constitution.
“We have now changed our name to Zimbabwe Boxing Federation with immediate effect. We also submitted our constitution approved by AIBA to the SRC and it was approved.
“It was agreed at the AIBA annual congress in 2010 that all nations should drop the word amateur from their names because we are no longer looking at amateur boxing only,” said Sibanda.
Sports Commission sport development manager, Angela Nyaundi, confirmed the changes and said they were made early this month.
Meanwhile, the national federation has rescheduled their general assembly that was pencilled for Saturday in Gweru to March 21 after most of their members failed to turn up.
The members were attending an induction workshop held by the Sports Commission for the Zone Six Youth Games.
“We are having a tournament with the Zambians, they are out to compete with us in preparation for their Commonwealth Games. The tournament will be on March 22,” said Sibanda.
“We are saying all clubs will come for general assembly, after that we have the tournament the following day. It’s an international tournament featuring all weight divisions.”
Sibanda said they will stage a National Open tournament this Saturday in Bulawayo to select the team that will take on the Zambians next month.
“What we are going to do is we are having a tournament this Saturday, we want to see how our champions are doing, just to assess them so that we choose those that will represent us.
“We urge all clubs and provinces to come,” said Sibanda.
