POPULARLY known as the “Boxing Chairman” because of the way he usually dominates opponents, Tinashe Mwadziwana is back in business after a 15-month sabbatical.

The veteran boxer, who has 33 fights under his belt, will square up against Laston Kaira of Malawi, in a super featherweight bout at Phil Jen Country Lodges in Chivhu on November 1.

Mwadziwana has promised to dish out a sumptuous boxing dish in the Mashonaland East town.

The bout is one of the 20 fights lined up for the inaugural “Trabablas Gloves On” tournament that has been put up by the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy in collaboration with Delta Force boxing promotions.

The international tournament is bringing together boxers from several countries, including DR Congo, Malawi and Zambia.

And Mwadziwana, who last fought in July, 2024, views this tournament as an opportunity for him to prove that he is still worth the salt despite the long absence from the scene.

The former World Boxing Federation Africa champion had temporarily stopped boxing to concentrate on other business ventures.

“The boxing Chairman has not been in the ring for a long time, and I know my fans have been missing me.

“I was focusing on other businesses, so I had no time for training but I am back in the gym, preparing for the up-coming fight,” said Mwadziwana, who hails from Mbare.

He is also a close friend of popular Zim dancehall singer Kelvin “Killer T” Kusikwenyu.

Coincidentally, Kusikwenyu is also known as “Chairman” in Zim dancehall circles.

“I want to thank Charles Manyuchi and Clyde Musonda of Delta Force for putting up this fight.

“They have brought me back to the ring. I am promising fireworks in Chivhu.

“Fans want to watch real boxing and I will dish it out in Chivhu.

“Fans pay their hard-earned money, so they want value for their money,” Mwadziwana told Zimpapers Sports Hub.

The 35-year-old pugilist has 19 wins in 33 fights and is targeting his 20th win in professional boxing.

“I have been in this game for a long time, so yeah, it would be good to notch up my 20th win.”Mwadziwana turned professional in 2009, but his career has been on and off due to several factors including lack of financial support.

He is eager to get back to business at the “Trabablas Gloves On” tournament.

In a first of its kind, Zimbabwe will host a 20-bout mega boxing tournament that will attract 40 pugilists from across the region.

Some of the boxers who will fight in Chivhu include former Africa Boxing Union Lightweight champion Aliyah Phiri.

Talented Super Middleweight boxers Clever Sithole, Evans Husayihwevhu and Simon Ngoma of Zambia will also showcase their skills.

The tournament will also honour the achievements made by the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa.
