BOXING takes centre stage in Bulawayo on Saturday when the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF), in conjunction with Palace Hotel, hosts a national tournament that is expected to bring together some of the country’s finest amateur fighters in what promises to be an explosive weekend of action.
The tournament marks another significant boost for the city’s growing boxing scene, with clubs from across Zimbabwe expected to square off in bouts across different weight divisions as the federation continues its drive to develop the sport through regular competitions.
ZBF technical director Steven Masiyambumbi said preparations for the tournament were complete and expressed confidence that fans would be treated to high-quality boxing.
“We are looking forward to a successful tournament. Everything is in place and we expect clubs from across the country to put on a good show,” said Masiyambumbi.
“These competitions are very important because they keep our boxers active while also giving us an opportunity to assess talent for future national team assignments. Every tournament contributes to the growth of boxing in Zimbabwe.”
Masiyambumbi said the federation was pleased to once again partner with Palace Hotel in bringing elite amateur boxing back to Bulawayo.
“We appreciate the support from Palace Hotel. Partnerships like these are critical because they help us take boxing to different parts of the country and expose more young athletes to competitive boxing,” he said.
Palace Hotel proprietor Tapiwa Gandiwa said everything was set for an entertaining event, urging boxing lovers to come out in their numbers.
“We are delighted to once again partner the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation. Boxing has always received tremendous support in Bulawayo and we are looking forward to another memorable tournament,” said Gandiwa.
“We have worked hard to ensure the event is enjoyable for the whole family. The aim is not only to showcase boxing talent but also to create an exciting atmosphere for everyone who comes through the gates.”
Clubs expected to take part will include Black Rhinos, HQ 1 Brigade, 5 Brigade, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Prisons and Correctional Services, Air Force of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo, Harare, Midlands, Victoria Falls Boxing Academy, Manyuchi Boxing Academy, Masvingo, Gwanda, Hwange and Beitbridge.
