THE Zimbabwe boxing team fared badly on day one of the AUSC under-20 Youth Games with only one boxer proceeding to the next round yesterday.
Zimbabwe had five boxers competing in the preliminary round and only Ndodana Ncube who beat Abram Kamogelo Radebe of South Africa advanced to the semi-finals in light fly weight category.
However, it was not all rosy for Dignity Ncube who lost to Fransisco Gomez of Angola in the Bantamweight division while Spencer Mhuruyengwe controversially lost to Alino Masamba of Zambia in the same category.
Samsom Masiyambumbi also went out in the preliminary round when he lost to Nkumbu Silungwe in the Light Welter division, and so was Lancelot Moyo who lost to Snamiso Ntuli of South Africa to complete a disappointing day for Team Zimbabwe.
However, Zimbabwe is now left with five boxers; two, who will compete in the semi-finals tomorrow while another three will compete in the finals, thanks to a bye.
Surprisingly, Zimbabwean coach Petros Masiyambumbi was full of praise for his fighters as he believed they lost with dignity.
“We are happy with the overall performance of the boxers especially taking into account the time we prepared for these competitions and the time our opponents also took to prepare. In terms of preparations they were way ahead of us but on the ring we gave them a torrid time,” said Masiyambumbi
