CITY of Kings boxing fans are in for a treat when the Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association (Baba) holds its second bout of the year at Mpopoma’s Mathonisa Beer Garden tomorrow.
At least 20 pulsating bouts will be staged at Baba’s Independence tournament that will also feature out of Bulawayo boxers.
Baba vice-chairman Ezwell Ndlovu said Great Zimbabwe University of Masvingo is sending 12 boxers and they were waiting for confirmation from Matabeleland North, Gwanda and Gweru.
Ndlovu said Baba and the provinces that they invited will use the competition to identify boxers that will represent them at this year’s Zimbabwe National Youth Games to be held in Chinhoyi in August.
Besides the Youth Games, provinces will also use the competition to identify boxers to represent them at the Champion of Champions and Inter-Provincial Games to be staged later this year.
“Everything is set for our Independence celebrations tournament, which will be held at Mathonisa on Saturday. What we are simply doing is taking boxing to the people. The tournament is open to all amateur boxers and we believe that the more the boxers, the more the fun. We’re expecting about 20 bouts because GZU are coming with 12 boxers and in our last competition we had 12 fights,” said Ndlovu.
Baba held its first tournament of the year on April 3.
Tshaka Youth Centre’s Lwazi Mpofu was voted the best boxer following two wins on points against Andile Mthiyane of Nkulumane and Nketa’s Lwazi Moyo.
Mpofu will be among the pugilists to watch at Mathonisa.
Boxers from Bulawayo’s eight clubs Nketa, Nkulumane, Tshaka, Lobengula, Luveve’s Percy, HQ One Brigade, Sikhulile and Bulawayo West will battle it out in different divisions.
