Let Jason Bateman amuse you on February 4 in his role as Conrad, in “The Longest Week”. Jason is an immature man-child who has spent his life in a chic Manhattan Hotel ever since his parents decided to take a 20-year vacation to Paris, leaving him to be raised by hotel staff at the age of 11. His spoiled life comes to an end when he loses his trust fund as a result of his parents’ divorce and is forced out on the street.
The film also stars Olivia Wilde and Billy Crudup and will be available from the 4th of February.
If you feel you’ve gained back your equilibrium enough to watch another film based on a historical figure, then catch Dracula Untold from February 9. The story chronicles a young prince who, when the lives of his wife and child are put in danger by a bloodthirsty sultan, risks his soul to save them and in the process begins his tragic transformation into the eternally infamous vampire. Expect epic fight scenes and lots of blood and gore.
But truth be told, 2014’s most disturbing blood and gore scene award goes to psychological thriller, “Gone Girl” (also available from February 9) starring Ben Afleck and Rosamund Pike whose role recently garnered her a Screen Actors Guild Award, Golden Globe and Oscar nominations in the Best Actress category. Based on a best-selling Gillian Flynn novel by the same name, this story revolves around Nick Dunne who reports that his beautiful wife, Amy, has gone missing on the day of their fifth wedding anniversary. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble, leaving him as a prime suspect. Not one to be missed.
Transport your inner-child to a happy place with this Jonathan Liebesman-directed version of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. When New York City is in trouble, it’s up to these four ninja-fighting, pizza-loving brothers to save it. Aided by reporter April O’Neil – played by Megan Fox (Transformers) and their wise master Splinter, these heroes must face their ultimate nemesis – the evil Shredder. This fun action film for the whole family is available from the 10th of February.
He made funk music trendy and made dancing the Mashed Potato in skin-tight bell-bottoms look masculine. There aren’t many people who can claim to have never heard of the legendary James Brown, AKA The Godfather of Soul. From 11 February, BoxOffice will be screening Get On Up, a biographical movie starring Dan Aykroyd and Chadwick Boseman which chronicles the life and times of James Brown, from his rise from extreme poverty to become one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
Catch Paul Walker’s final act in a film that turned out to be his last completed project before his tragic death in 2013. In “Brick Mansions”, Paul plays an undercover Detroit cop who navigates a dangerous neighbourhood that’s surrounded by a containment wall with the help of an ex-con in order to bring down a crime lord and his plot to devastate the entire city. Available on the Box Office from February 21.
Also catch another fallen star, Phillip Seymor Hoffmann is his last leading role in a feature film before his death last year in “A Most Wanted Man” from February 3.
When an immigrant turns up in Hamburg’s Islamic community, laying claim to his father’s ill-gotten fortune, both German and US security agencies take a close interest: as the clock ticks down and the stakes rise, the race is on to establish this most wanted man’s true identity – oppressed victim or destruction-bent extremist?
If you’re looking for more intense action, then don’t miss Liam Neeson in his tried-tested-and-usually-works role where someone gets kidnapped and it’s his character’s job to find them and eliminate the bad guys.
In “A Walk Among the Tombstones”, Liam is Matt Scudder, an ex-NYPD cop who now works as an unlicensed private investigator operating just outside of the law. When he reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker hunt down the men who kidnapped and then brutally murdered the trafficker’s wife, Scudder learns that this is not the first time these men have committed this sort of twisted crime, and it won’t be the last. Available from the February 21.
