Boy (4) assaulted over maintenance

Court Reporter
A 33-year-old Chitungwiza woman who assaulted her four-year-old son as punishment for his father’s alleged irresponsibility has been ordered to perform 350 hours of community service.
Judith Mundandi of St Mary’s assaulted the boy because the minor’s father was not offering anything for his upkeep.
Mundandi also threatened to stab her former husband, Passmore Mugwanyi (33), for marrying another wife.

Appearing before magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo, Mundandi pleaded guilty to two counts of harassment, ill-treating and neglecting children.
Mr Murendo sentenced her to 15 months in prison for both counts and suspended five months for five years.

The remaining 10 months were commuted to the unpaid work at St Mary’s Clinic.
Prosecutor Ms Zuvarashe Mushayabasa told the court that on June 21 this year, and at house number 1646 in the suburb, Mundandi assaulted her son with a pipe.
She beat the minor while telling him that his father was not meeting his needs.

The boy went to his father’s house also in St Mary’s in tears and told him what had happened.
The court heard that Mugwanyi took his son to Mundandi, where he demanded an explanation as to why she was ill-treating him.

Irked by the inquisition, Mundandi started shouting at Mugwanyi before pointing a knife at him, threatening to stab him for marrying another wife.
The court heard that Mundandi had also assaulted the boy on June 20.
