TANGWENA Village, under Chief Nyashanu was plunged into mourning after a five-year-old boy drowned in Mwerahari River last Sunday, hours after being reported missing.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Leeroy Tavangwena.
Leeroy had accompanied two siblings to wash school uniforms in the river.
“On September 26, at around 2pm, Farai Tavangwena (13), Ruvarashe Tavangwena (10) and Leeroy Tavangwena (5), went to Mwerahari River to wash their uniforms. After finishing washing, they started swimming in the river. Leeroy went to fetch their clothes, which were about 50 metres away from where they were swimming,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka, adding that he did not return.
“His brother followed, but could not locate him. He informed his father, Canius Tavangwena (39). His father then informed Moses Tavangwena (26), to help him look for his son, but they could not locate him,” he said, adding that the Tavangwenas filed a missing person report at ZRP Murambinda.
“As they were going home, Moses Tavangwena decided to pass through the river again, and found Leeroy floating dead at the edge of the river,” he said.
The police attended the scene and conveyed the body to Murambinda Mission Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
“We continue to urge parents to ensure the safety of minors around rivers and dams” added Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
