WHAT was meant to be a night of warmth ended in cold tragedy.
A postmortem has confirmed that five family members who perished in their sleep in Gudhuza Village, Zvishavane, were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning from a brazier they lit to keep warm.
The incident, which has rocked the Masunda chieftaincy, claimed the lives of three adults and two children from the Simango and Ncube families.
“The postmortem results confirm the five died from inhaling carbon monoxide fumes while sleeping,” said Chief Masunda, who also revealed the burial plans.
The victims; John Ncube (57), Nigel Ncube (30), Jeremiah Simango (42), Denzel Simango (15), and Jedire Simango (8), will be laid to rest today in Shurugwi, Gutu and Zvishavane.
Their bodies were collected from Nyaradzo and Doves funeral parlours yesterday.
As Gudhuza Village prepares for the sombre farewell, a cloud of grief and shock still hangs heavy, a heartbreaking reminder of the deadly danger that can lurk in a simple brazier.
Rest in peace to the five lost souls.
