Three school children were this (Wednesday) morning injured after a commuter omnibus they were travelling in was hit by a train at a level crossing in Mahatshula, Bulawayo.
The kombi was carrying learners to their respective schools.
The three children were rushed to hospital and are in stable condition.
National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) spokesperson, Mr Andrew Kunambura confirmed the incident.
“A team from NRZ was dispatched to the accident scene and preliminary findings show that the driver of the commuter omnibus failed to observe level crossing regulations.
“Two vehicles had stopped at the level crossing but the commuter omnibus driver decided to overtake the stationary cars. His vehicle was then hit by a train.
“Three school kids got injured and were taken to a local hospital. They are in stable condition,” said Mr Kunambura.
He urged drivers to observe level crossing regulations to avoid collisions with trains.
“A driver must stop at a level crossing and look at both sides to make sure there is no train approaching. One should only proceed when they are sure that the rail tracks are free of traffic.”
