BREAKING – Erica Gwetai is no more

RENOWNED Zimbabwean educationist, author, and cultural figure Mrs. Ericah Gwetai has passed away. She died on Friday, 18 September 2026, at the age of 84.

Her son, Tafadzwa Gwetai, confirmed her passing in a moving tribute that celebrated her lifelong dedication to moulding young minds and enriching the country’s literary landscape.

“It is with heavy heart that I announce the passing of our mother, teacher and moral compass, Mrs. Ericah Gwetai,” Tafadzwa said. “She was a strong believer in children’s education as she had been an educationist for most of her life. She is among the last of a disappearing breed of teachers who cared for and nurtured her students. As an author/writer, she found a new avenue to entertain, educate and share with us parts of her past world and life.”

Born on 2 February 1942, Mrs. Gwetai spent decades balancing her passion for scholarship with a deep commitment to creative expression.

As a published author, she produced several notable works that explored complex social dynamics and personal reflections, including: Embracing the Cactus, Realities, Petal Thoughts: Yvonne Vera, and The Other Side, among other books.

Her contributions to the nation’s creative sector received prominent recognition in 2023, when she was honoured with the Icon Award at the Bulawayo Arts Awards—a fitting tribute to her decades-long influence in literature and education.

As the mother of the late celebrated literary polymath Yvonne Vera, Mrs. Gwetai’s life was often viewed through the lens of her daughter’s historic achievements. However, Mrs. Gwetai consistently established herself as a distinct voice with a unique body of work. While deeply honoring her daughter’s groundbreaking contributions, she carved out her own individual space as a writer, educator, and community figure.
