A FIRE broke out in a building along Leopard Takawira Avenue between George Silundika Street and Fife Street in Bulawayo on Wednesday afternoon, sending plumes of smoke across the central business district.

The fire was reported at around 1.15PM, with witnesses saying smoke could be seen billowing from the building.

The affected building is next to Selbourne Hotel.

“The building that is burning is next to Selbourne Hotel and I can see clouds of smoke from the building where I work, which is about two streets away from the site of the fire,” said the witness.

She said she later heard sirens, believed to be from the Bulawayo Fire Brigade, as fire engines rushed towards the scene.

The extent of the damage and the cause of the fire were not immediately known.

More details are expected as emergency services assess the situation.
