Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Cde Saviour Kasukuwere has reversed the decision by the Harare City Council to dismiss 3000 council workers based on the Supreme Court ruling upholding an employer’s right to fire workers on three months’ notice.
Minister Kasukuwere said Council could not fire workers while Government was in the middle of amending the Labour Bill.
“We cannot have 3000 workers being fired at once so I have asked the City to prepare a full report which states the City’s workforce. I am surprised that the City of Harare has moved in that direction before consulting me,” said Minister Kasukuwere.
