A 38-year-old Plumtree fugitive who allegedly unleashed a reign of terror in the border town before fleeing the country has been re-arrested after being deported from Malawi, bringing an abrupt end to his cross-border escape.
Cabangani Mathe, a former businessman from Plumtree, was dramatically taken into custody on his return to Zimbabwe after Malawian authorities discovered he had no identification or valid travel documents.
Investigations into his identity reportedly exposed that he was a wanted fugitive in Zimbabwe, triggering his deportation and immediate arrest by members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Homicide unit.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest yesterday, saying Mathe is now back in custody and facing the consequences of his actions.
“I can confirm that Cabangani Mathe was deported from Malawi after he was found without any form of identification or documentation. Upon verification, it was established that he was a wanted person in Zimbabwe. He was arrested by members of the CID Homicide unit and has since appeared in court,” said Comm Nyathi.
