IT has emerged that the late former Highlanders midfielder Brian “Bibiza Ndazula” Banda died just two weeks after the birth of his son, without ever seeing him.
“It’s unfortunate. We’ve lost a brother, someone we trusted completely. He leaves behind three children, the youngest being a baby boy we’d only christened Junior. It’s painful that he passed on before he even held his two week old son,” said Banda’s elder sister, Beauty Dube.
Banda is survived by three children, two daughters, Bandile Primrose Banda and Langelihle Banda, and the newborn boy, whom he had promised to name once he met him.
BB, as he was affectionately known, was the only son in a family of four.
The funeral wake at 7550 Cowdray Park, the house Banda built for his mother, has drawn a strong turnout from the local football community, including former players Gift Lunga (Snr), Charles Sibanda, and FC Platinum administrator, Denzel Mnkandla.
One of Banda’s closest associates and former teammate at both Highlanders and FC Platinum, Devine Mhindirira, wept uncontrollably.
The diminutive Banda (29) was widely respected as one of Zimbabwe’s most disciplined and gifted midfielders. A former Highlanders and national team player, he earned admiration across the local game for his work ethic and composure on the ball.
The Entumbane-bred star was a passenger in a Toyota Corolla Bubble owned by Proton Bakeries, which veered off the road and overturned near the Fred Mine turn-off. The driver, trying to overtake at a blind spot, swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and lost control. The crash occurred around 2:30 AM.
Banda and another passenger died on the spot. The accident happened along the Zvishavane, Bulawayo Road, a day after Banda had watched his FC Platinum teammates draw 1–1 with defending champions Simba Bhora at Mandava Stadium. He had missed the match through injury.
In a heartfelt statement, FC Platinum confirmed the tragedy:
“We are deeply saddened to share the news of Brian Banda’s passing, which occurred today, June 29, 2025, in a car accident on the Zvishavane, Bulawayo Road.
