Four police officers stationed at Bulawayo Central Police Station have been arrested for allegedly demanding a bribe for the release of a suspected fraudster.
According to a police source, the quartet — Gombeyakho Ndlovu (37), Albert Madziva (38), Gibson Mupasiri (36) and Kenias Nyevedzanai (39) reportedly demanded a $100 bribe as a way to secure Noel Chida’s freedom.
Chida (34) had been arrested on allegations of duping a local fuel service station using already used 60-litre fuel coupons.
“The police officers picked up Chida while he was loading luggage on his vehicle along Khami road.
“Instead of heading to Bulawayo Central Police Station where they are stationed they forced the complainant to drive to his workplace,” the source said.
“Upon arrival at his workplace the suspects approached the manager Willcort Mlilo, who then later paid $641 which was equivalent to 60 litres.”
The four police officers reportedly told the complainant that he had been arrested for theft and fraud. However, they said there was an easy way to escape arrest.
They ordered him to drive to Bulawayo Central Police Station where upon arrival they allegedly informed him that they were feeling pity for him.
According to an official document in our possession the four law enforcers allegedly demanded $100 for a docket not to be opened.
“The accused persons demanded ZW$100 bribe so that they would not open theft and fraud charges against him due to that Chida allegedly paid ZW$100 and was released,” read part of the document.
On 28 August the complainant made a report at CID Police Anti-Corruption Unit where he explained what transpired. This led to the arrest of the quartet.
