The trial of two immigration officers arrested recently after they were caught on secret cameras taking bribes from travellers has been set for September 15 at the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court. Precious Ndomupei Dumbu and Tinashe Gotosa where picked up by police soon after collecting the money. They are facing criminal abuse of office charges.It is alleged they were paid to tamper with stamps for two people who had overstayed. The closed circuit cameras are part of a raft of upgrades on security measures at the border as the Government seeks to reduce incidents of corruption and smuggling at ports of entry.
Dumbu and Gotosa were represented by Mr Reason Mutimba of Nyikandzino Legal Practice.
They denied the charges when they appeared before Mr Godswill Mavenge on Thursday. They were each released on $100 bail.
Prosecutor Mr Lloyd Mupfungidza said the duo were on duty on August 4 at Beitbridge Border Post.
They were allegedly caught on camera taking bribes of R300 from two travellers. They were picked up by police detectives soon after collecting the money.
Government has since secured $600 000 to procure resources needed in fighting corruption at the port of entry.
