JOHANNESBURG. — Business leaders from BRICS and African countries gathered in Johannesburg yesterday for their first official meeting of the BRICS Business Council.The two-day meeting, facilitated by South Africa Department of Trade and Industry, is bringing together business leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa and 19 other African countries.
The DTI said South African President Jacob Zuma will officially address the meeting. SA Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies and representatives from other BRICS countries will give keynote speeches.
BRICS is an acronym for the powerful grouping of the world’s leading emerging markets, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The BRICS Business Council was established during the BRICS Summit in Durban in March this year, with South African businessman Patrice Motsepe selected as its chairman.
The BRICS mechanism aims to promote peace, security, development and cooperation as well as to contribute to the establishment of a more equitable and fair world.
At the launch of the BRICS Business Council, Zuma described the body as “key measure to further increase intra-BRICS trade and investment.”
In a statement made available in the conference package, Motsepe said the meeting would focus on ensuring that the council’s objectives, as outlined in Durban, were fulfilled. — Xinhua.
