CUSHIONS may be considered as trivial accessories that a room can do without . . . but that is not the case. A vibrant cushion can transform an entire room’s decor and deliver a bold colour statement. Cushions can bring a modern colour and eclectic look into your home by making it beautiful and bright. Sizes, texture, colours, arrangement, shape and numbers of cushions are some of the factors to take into account when decorating your room with cushions.
In this week’s column I will take you through factors to consider when using cushions to decorate your room.
The most important thing when using cushions is selecting your colour. Colour is probably the most important phase, even more important than selecting the actual cushions themselves. If the colours are selected correctly they can unify all the elements in your room and help to create an elegant, welcoming and harmonious look. For example, living rooms have different colours from the patterns on your curtains, portraits, coffee tables and vases to name a few . . . they all add colour to your room. It is important to select your cushions based on the colours that already exist in your living room, be it a couch, curtains or any other element in the room. By so doing, you can subtly pull together all the busyness in the room and help the existing colours to complement each other, rather than work against each other.
The colour should exist in some other element in your room — it could be your curtains, a painting on the wall or a vase on a coffee table. They must complement each other — this is the most important criteria. Don’t choose three really loud and bright cushions. They must look really good together, all on their own. Take some time over your decision because these colours will inform your cushion selection and will ultimately be the glue that pulls your living room colours together.
The number of cushions you can buy is determined by the style you prefer. For instance some prefer the conventional style which means they can go with the even number and deep colours of cushions and those who prefer modern style can stick to an odd number. This may seem strange but it can really make a difference when it comes to the arrangement of the cushions on the couch.
Selecting your cushions is probably the easiest things to do as long as you have chosen your colours and the number of your cushions. When you are selecting your cushions, you need to have your colour palette close by. You want to select a range of cushions that use these colours. Your cushions do not necessarily need to have all of the colours that you have chosen, they can have one of your colours . . . the important thing is to have a dominant colour.
Till next time.
