“Bring in Anti-Corruption Commission to clean up Highlanders”

Highlanders Football Club is engulfed in turmoil following the explosive resignation of Acting CEO Kindman Ndlovu.

His departure, detailed in a scathing letter last week, cites a toxic environment and clashes with Finance Executive member Nkani Khoza. However, the letter’s unprecedented detail has ignited fierce backlash, with many fans and observers claiming it is a desperate smokescreen to obscure alleged deep-rooted corruption, alleged player contract fraud, and a systematic “capture” of the club by individuals prioritising self-enrichment over Bosso’s legacy.

Ndlovu’s resignation letter, addressed to chairman Kenneth Mhlophe and copied to key executives, blamed Khoza for creating intolerable conditions. His accusations include: Khoza denying knowledge of Exco resolutions despite documented minutes. Retrospectively reviewing pre-tenure transactions and prematurely labelling discrepancies as “fraudulent” without consultation. Interviewing Ndlovu’s staff and requesting reports behind his back. Inappropriately seeking access to the CEO’s office (doubling as a filing room), where sensitive documents are kept. Setting a “trap” by avoiding input on sensitive issues only to later criticize actions taken.

Ndlovu stated his immediate resignation was essential “to minimise the damage to my image and reputation.”

While Ndlovu framed his exit as a stand against misconduct, the letter’s sheer volume and specificity, however, triggered widespread mixed reactions.
“This letter is smelly,” declared Mandla Tshuma of the Bosso Cowdray Park Chapter. “It’s awash with reasons, smirking of someone trying to cover their tracks and those of their buddies before the net closes. Why this sudden, exhaustive list on the way out? Khoza is finally doing the job the treasurer should have done for years.”

Ndlovu’s resignation came at a time when the team is struggling on the field of play, and the emergence of more allegations of unprofessionalism by some members of the executive and board.

There are allegations that there are some players who have played cameo roles at the club but have “good contracts with benefits”, compared to some players who play week in, week out. There have been allegations that signing-off fees for players have been inflated, and money shared among officials. An executive member has also faced accusations of conflict of interest, where injured players were sent to his personal venture for medical procedures.

The crisis follows years of dysfunction. The CEO role has been a revolving door, with controversial departures and none fulfilling their constitutional mandate. The Treasurer’s office fared worse, culminating in a historic disaster: Bosso’s recent audited accounts reportedly received a disclaimer of opinion from auditors, their most severe finding. This means auditors found records so inadequate they couldn’t verify the financial statements, rendering the club “financially non-existent.”

A section of the fans believes there is a need for a serious audit of the club’s finances, and those found on the wrong side of the law are reported to the police and the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission to clean the club of corruption.
