POULTRY producers in Bulawayo recorded brisk business this festive season. They told Business Chronicle that their businesses flourished and were operating profitably. “This year business is flourishing and I am making big profits,” said Sheila Sibanda, a small-scale producer in the city.
“People seem to be buying more of chicken this festive season and that means big business for us. I had bought about 300 chicks in preparation for the festive season and it is bringing me big profits.” Another small-scale producer, Albert Ncube said most people were resorting to chicken because it was readily available. A person can choose to buy a live or slaughtered chicken which is another selling point.
“Many people prefer chicken because it is readily available and customers can choose to buy a live or a slaughtered chicken depending on their choice. The other thing is that our prices are affordable, a chicken ranges between $7 and $8,” he said.
He said the high number of weddings and other family gatherings during this period had boosted their business.
“There were many weddings, parties and some are still going on this season and we took the opportunity to supply some of these and it boosted our enterprises in a big way,” said Ncube.
A snap survey around the city’s supermarkets revealed that poultry products were in stock.
The retail outlets’ refrigerators were fully packed with different brands of chicken.
Nomsa Dlamini, a shop attendant in one of the supermarkets said they managed to meet the high demand for chicken this season.
“This season chicken is selling like hot cakes. By the end of the day you can find these refrigerators almost empty because more people are buying. The good thing is that we are managing to meet the high demand,” she said.
