IT’S a tale of unexpected triumph as Brazilian-born Portuguese coach, Baltermar Jose De Oiveira Brito, has emerged a towering figure among the big names of Zimbabwean football attracting the attention of none other than the legendary Jose Mourinho himself.
This “unheralded” coach took the reins, defying doubt and scepticism among the fan base. Often, comfort is found in the familiar established names with proven records, not in the enigma of an “unknown” tactician.
Nonetheless, the transient nature of coaching remains a constant. The reign of coaches, however decorated, is finite, leaving behind a blend of nostalgia and remorse. Instances such as Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from Manchester United and Arsene Wenger’s exit from Arsenal bear witness to the lasting void their absence created.
When Brito assumed the mantle of head coach at Highlanders FC, he was greeted with murmurs of “Who is Brito?” The former Mourinho deputy has since hushed the cynics through his on-field exploits.
Brito’s victories have displayed his exceptional acumen. His leadership has witnessed a revival in Highlanders’ fortunes, punctuating the scepticism that initially surrounded his appointment.
Highlanders FC are unbeaten in 18 league games, an accomplishment last witnessed in 2012 under Zambian coach Kelvin Kaindu who was unbeaten in 23 games. Brito and his charges have therefore rekindled optimism, fostering belief among the fans.
Brito’s squad seems poised to break the league drought that has persisted for over a decade. Their journey mirrors a resurgence in captivating football, a rarity in the local arena. Even Mourinho, “The Special One”, acknowledged their prowess.
Mourinho’s unexpected tribute to Brito’s remarkable run has underscored the global recognition garnered by Highlanders FC. As the season draws to a close, so does Brito’s contract. Speculation mounts that he is in the running for the national team post but the best gift for Bosso fans is a league title.
The prospect of Brito’s departure beckons the question: Who will fill his shoes? His profound understanding of the sport makes him a valuable asset for any team. Much like Ferguson and Wenger’s legacies, his departure will really be felt.
In the span of a mere year, Brito has transformed a team into an imposing force, evoking fear among rivals. His prowess as a coach extraordinaire leaves a legacy that his successor will grapple to uphold. His strategic genius and unyielding impact are woven into the fabric of Bosso, a testament to his irreplaceable stature.
Statistical evidence substantiates his prowess, labelling him a formidable coach. In simple terms, Brito’s absence will be palpable, leaving a void that will be difficult to fill.
