TWO Makoni siblings recently stunned a community court when they claimed that they do not have any other relatives except their jailed father.
This was after one of them had claimed lobola from his sister’s former husband.
Peter Mutemachani dragged Luckmore Chindomu, his sister’s ex-husband, to Chief Makoni’s court, demanding her bride price.
Naume Mutemachani and Chindomu recently divorced just outside Chief Makoni’s court and shared the property that they had acquired during their short-lived union.
During the court appearance, Peter was demanding six cattle and three goats from Chindomu, but the court queried the composition of the Mutemachani delegation that was made up of Peter and Naume only.
The court asked about the whereabouts of their parents or other senior clan members, but the two claimed that they do not have any relatives save for their father who is serving a eight-year jail term.
“Chindomu took my sister as his wife and stayed with her for some time. They had a baby who unfortunately passed on. He was so abusive to my sister during the course of the marriage and she ended up walking away from him. He has since married another woman.
“He did not pay anything towards Naume’s lobola, and I want him to pay six cattle and three goats. I am claiming the lobola alone since my father who should be doing this is in prison. Our clan is so small and we do not have any other relatives,” said Mutemachani.
Chindomu did not deny owing Mutemachani’s lobola and also confirmed that he had never met Naome’s relatives.
“It is true that I was yet to pay Naume’s lobola when we separated. I had only paid a goat towards masungiro. However, six cattle are just too much, especially considering that Naume is the one who opted out of the marriage. She also got a large chuck of our property.
“I am starting from scratch so it will be difficult for me to raise the six cattle. The court should also consider that I have a new partner whom I am yet to marry. For Naome I can only afford two cattle. I do not have problems in giving Peter the lobola since I do not know any other Mutemachani,” said Chindomu.
The court ordered Chindomu to pay two cattle and two goats as lobola by June 2024.
