Brother rapes teenage sister

A Mabvuku man appeared in court on Tuesday after he allegedly raped his 15-year-old sister on the pretext that he was testing her virginity.

The man (name withheld to protect the victim) accused the sister of sleeping around.

When the teenage girl disputed the allegations, he raped her on two occasions saying he was testing her virginity.

The suspect, who had been on the run for a year, was arrested last week.

He appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe facing two counts of rape and was remanded in custody with instructions to seek bail at the High Court.

The lower court does not have jurisdiction to entertain bail in third schedule offences.

Prosecuting, Ms Sheilla Mhuru alleged that sometime in May 2014 the accused confronted his sister and accused her of having a sexual relationship with a boy from their neighbourhood.

When the sister dismissed the allegations, the brother is alleged to have demanded to be intimate with her to prove if she was still a virgin.

She refused.

The brother then tripped the sister and she fell.

He then raped her.

He is alleged to have raped the sister again in a cemetery.

The court heard that he threatened to assault the sister if ever she alerted anyone about the abuse.
