The Budiriro community has expressed gratitude towards local police for their decisive action in shutting down a notorious drug base and brothel that had marred the Current Shopping Centre.
This operation followed residents’ concerns raised during an anti-drug awareness campaign, culminating in the demolition of a site littered with used condoms and associated debris.
Agnes Tavaziva, a resident of Budiriro, commended the increased police presence following the campaign.
“I truly believe the police have heard our concerns.
“Since that day, we’ve noticed a significant number of officers patrolling the shopping area, even at night. This is commendable because these hooligans had begun to act as if they were above the law, terrorising residents,” she expressed.
Assistant Inspector Faith Mapisa, deputy provincial police spokesperson for Harare, confirmed the operation and encouraged residents to continue reporting drug-related activities.
“During our routine crime awareness campaigns in Budiriro, we uncovered a brothel operating within the Current Shopping Centre,” she explained. In response to residents’ disgust over the unsightly establishment, we took immediate action. We are grateful for the community’s support in executing this demolition.”
She emphasised that running a brothel is a criminal offense and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to upholding law and order.
“We will not tolerate such lawlessness, nor will we allow our communities to be overrun by immorality.
“This message is being echoed across the province,” Ass-Insp Mapisa added.
Additionally, reports have emerged about individuals claiming connections to law enforcement who exploited the drug base and brothel for financial gain. These individuals reportedly engaged in violent disputes over the proceeds from their illicit activities.
