WARD 43 Budiriro North Councillor Austin Munamba has applauded the roll-out of the prepaid water meter programme by Helcraw Water in partnership with the City of Harare.

In an interview, Clr Munamba said the programme had also been positively received by residents.

“Most residents have welcomed the awareness by Helcraw Water on the advantages of the prepaid meters,” he said.

“But residents were asking how long they are supposed to take to clear their outstanding City of Harare accounts and how they are going to get water, as our houses do not receive water.

“We told the residents that Helcraw Water will first install prepaid meters, followed by the pipe replacement programme, which will eliminate leaks for water to then reach their houses,” he said.

Cllr Munamba said prepaid water meters were first installed at Current Jaravaza, where they were received positively.

“This was then followed by Budiriro 4, where they were also well received, then at Tabudirira and the Cabs area, where they were also well received.

“If they ensure that water is available to residents, just like the prepaid water meters that they are installing, that would be a welcome move because most residents were complaining of paying water bills yet they do not receive water,” he said.

Clr Munamba said the repairs at Morton Jaffray Waterworks and Warren Control will also result in water being able to be supplied to the ward.

He said residents rely on boreholes drilled by the Government and by the community.

Clr Munamba said residents were also inquiring whether the boreholes would be decommissioned after the installation of the water meters.
