BUHERA South will come alive this Saturday when eight football teams and several netball sides gather at Muzokomba Secondary School for a grassroots sports festival running under the theme “Unlocking grassroots superheroes through sport.”

The one day event will not only showcase talent but also draw the attention of football and netball scouts, who have been invited by organisers to identify promising players from the rural community.

Organisers’ spokesperson Peter Rubaya said the tournament is a much, needed platform for budding stars who rarely get such exposure.

“Buhera is full of talent. I feel it’s high time we do more tournaments so that players can be noticed,” said Rubaya.

“For example, Chabata Primary and Secondary’s netball teams have been regulars at NASH competitions since 2012, but none of the girls have ever made it into the national team or a local league. We want to change that.”

The football line up features teams from across Buhera South, including Malables FC (Ward 17), Mutiusinazita (Ward 27), A.K FC (Ward 28), Majigisi FC (Ward 29), Muringa FC (Ward 30), G.P Tymers FC (Ward 33), and Chaputika FC (Ward 25).

All teams have confirmed participation, and according to Rubaya, there are plans to expand in future.

“For now, we’re focusing on football and netball, but the next edition will include more sports. We’re also incentivising the teams to keep them motivated,” he said.

The initiative is the brainchild of Tawanda Marwizi, a Buhera South native, and has already attracted interest beyond the district. Rubaya confirmed that a number of sports personalities will attend to inspire and mentor the youngsters.

Adding to the buzz, musicians Mark Ngwazi, Blessing Shumba, and Culture Love will provide entertainment.
