A 30-year-old Buhera woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Mutare Regional Court on a human trafficking charge after luring a 14-year-old girl to Mutare for prostitution purposes.

On June 29, 2025, Pelagia Zindiye approached the victim and deceived her into accompanying her to Mutare under the false pretense of retrieving some belongings.

The following day, the victim secretly left her home and travelled to Mutare with Zindiye.

Upon arrival in Mutare, they met Steward Gororo, a truck driver who is currently on the run.

She left the victim with Gororo and collected US$40 as payment for sexual services to be rendered by the victim.

Gororo took the victim to a restaurant, where he led her to a private room, locked the door and raped her.

After the sexual assault, the truck driver ordered her not to disclose the matter to anyone.

A tip-off was made to the police, leading to the arrest of Zindiye.

The National Prosecuting Authority said, “This case highlights the need for continued vigilance and protection of vulnerable persons, especially the girl child.

“Sexual violence is a serious crime, so is human trafficking. Let’s stand together to protect the vulnerable and ensure offenders are brought to justice.”
