A SELF-EMPLOYED builder has been implicated in the Newcastle Group of Schools armed robbery in May this year.

Washington Chikava appeared before magistrate, Marewanazvo Gofa, who advised him to apply for bail at the High Court because he is facing a third schedule offence.

The court heard that on May 8, 2024, Chikava and his accomplices went to the school, armed with unidentified pistols, and knives.

Inside the school premises, Chinagina opened Courage Giwa’s bedroom and produced an unidentified pistol and pointed it at him.

The suspected armed robbers tied Giwa’s legs and hands with electric cables then left him under guard in his room.

The other gang members went to the parking area where they rounded up other complainants and forced them to march to Giwa’s home.

The court documents show that the suspected robbers left the complainants under guard and went to the school administration block.

On their way to the administration block, the court heard, Chinagina fired two shots into the air.

The gang allegedly used iron bars to force the main door open and gain entry.

They broke into several offices, looking for money but could not find anything.

The robbers allegedly vandalised the block’s ceiling then went to the Senior School where they broke into the storeroom and again found nothing of value.

They then returned to Giwa’s residence where they stole electrical gadgets worth US$2 500, including 3 x 43 volts car batteries and cellphones.

In another count, the court heard that Chikava and his accomplices raided Prisca Chisango’s home armed with unidentified pistol, knives and bricks.

They claimed they had information that she was in possession of US$30 000.

They demanded for her safe keys and directions to the safe.

Chisango told them that she didn’t have that kind of money neither did she have a safe, which infuriated them and they began assaulting her.

They tied her mouth and both hands with a cloth.

Chisango then surrendered US$650 which was in the house.

They went on to take a solar inverter, 24 volts lithium battery, two cellphones, an iPad and a laptop.
