Building child-parent relationships

Black-Family

Kilton Moyo

Nowadays I often hear people everywhere complaining and mourning the lack of respect in our societies. I hear the elderly blame it on today’s youth and the youth also blame it on today’s elders. It is a tug of war situation. I am not always very surprised about it as I read through my Bible and found out such things will happen in the end times.

I also want to believe there is very little teaching on proper family relations or on proper child to parent relationships. We build our relationships based on what the TV and human rights activism is teaching. We hardly build our family relationships based on what the Bible teaches and as a result most of our family relationships are fake and weak. By so doing, we fall easy prey to the schemes of the enemy who is after destroying us and our children.

One way he has done this is through ungodly relationships in the family, relationships marred by violence, rebellion and many other ills.

These days you see rebellious children all over the streets. You see violent children everywhere and you read of stories on how they have killed their parents and how they have stolen from their homes and done so much evil against their own parents. It is a sad thing to hear of children killing their parents as it is a sad thing to hear parents killing their children. I want to pay more attention today on our relationships with our parents. This is where many of us have been robbed by the devil. Maybe we need to just run through three most important builders of these relationships.

Honouring our parents
This is the first law in the Bible that has a reward. The reward of honouring your parents is two-fold. The Bible teaches that it will be well with you when you honour your parents. Who does not want to have it all well in this life? I do agree that you have to work and do all those things but listen, if you do not honour your parents it is never well with you even if you have money or whatever status. This could be one reason for our miseries in this life in that we have not adhered to the basic law of human living, honouring our parents. The other benefit is that you will live long on earth. Again who does not want to live long here? We all want to but there is a condition.

Rebellious and violent children who do not want to obey their parents soon find themselves in trouble and in most cases dead. Rebellion against your parents is the most evil you can commit as a child or anyone born of parents. It is an effort against your own life. It is like suicide. All God desires is that we honour our parents, esteem them, praise them for their efforts and respect them. We live within a generation that is so ungrateful. A generation obsessed with so called human rights and think they are entitled to everything and anything. People who cannot appreciate the efforts of hard working parents. I have heard foolish young people claim that they never asked their parents to give birth to them and so they must toil to care for them. I see these days a generation deceived by the so called human rights which suggest it is your right not to honour your parents. That is a shame. You can do all you want but not with your parents.

It is not honour when your parents send you to school, pay fees through sweat and you bunk school or come home pregnant or having made someone pregnant. It is not honour to shout at your parents and to come home late and lie. It is not honour to go out with foolish friends, drink and be involved in drugs and many other wrong things. It is not honour doing what you are doing behind your parents’ back. You are cutting your own life short. God does not lie.

Obeying our parents
The other expectation from God is that we obey our parents. The Bible says it is pleasing to God and it is right with God. Many young people find it easy to obey friends than their parents. They find it easy to obey and bow to prophets than their parents. They obey politicians more than their parents. They obey things more than their parents. I think this is all deception. God expects us to obey our parents in all things. Our parents are like God to us as children. We cannot easily obey God if we cannot obey our parents. This is one reason why we have a lot of fake Christians who are struggling in honouring, obeying and submitting to God because they have not done it at the first line of that duty which is their parents.

Submitting to our parents
Submitting to our parents makes us enjoy their protection. The Bible teaches that anyone who breaks the edge will be bitten by snakes. We stay within our parental hedge of protection through our submission to them. They have a godly duty of looking after us and protecting us and teaching about God and life. Say yes to their disciplining. Say yes to their correction. I would rather have you submit well to your parents than to all the things you are submitting to.

Submitting to our parents pleases God and is what He has designed for us all. Our duty is to submit and not to come up with all the excuses that we profile to justify our failure.

I am not scaring you when I say that most of us are struggling in this life because we have not honoured, obeyed and submitted to our parents. I am not cruel when I say that some of us are in slums and in prison and in trouble because we chose to rebel against our protection. Some people are dead because of this. Some of us will have to swallow our pride and go back and make it right with our parents. We struggle with a lot of things in life and think we are bewitched and yet we have done it against ourselves by simply breaking one important law of life, I mean this life beloved.

Honouring our parents anoints us for this life more than that oil you waste money on. Honouring and obeying our parents liberates us and releases the blessing of life in us. I want to make an appeal to you as you read this article, to search yourself wherever you are and repent and begin to run on this path the Lord prepared for all of us. Maybe the marriage will come. Maybe the job will come. Maybe the doors will open. Maybe it is the only thing holding you back and afflicting you.

Only three things, honour, obey and submit, will give you the breakthrough you are looking for.

“Honour your father and your mother which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on earth.” Ephesians 6:2-3.
