LAWRENCE Mkwala, the director provincial education services for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province has challenged the province’s secondary schools athletics to embrace sportsmanship.
Mkwala was the guest of honour at the farewell ceremony for the National Association of Secondary Schools Heads Bulawayo track and field team. The team left for Harare on Monday afternoon to take part in the national finals in which 10 provinces will take part.
Bulawayo for the third year running are sponsored by Bakers Inn who providing fuel for transport, tracksuits and event kit. Excelling athletes according to company representative Licia Ncube, will have up to three months of bread supply.
The team left for Harare for a championship that starts on Wednesday.
The provinces selected their teams at the inter-district finals held more than a fortnight ago.
Most spent the last 10 days in camp and an explosive two days of track and field looks on the card with Harare, favourites once more.
Mkwala said the gathering was about celebrating young individuals who have demonstrated dedication, discipline, and excellence in sport.
“Today, we are not just sending you to a competition, we are sending ambassadors of Bulawayo Province,” said Makwala.
He emphasized the importance of discipline. He said success is also measured by one’s character.
“As you go to the national stage, remember that success is not only measured by medals, but also by character.
Compete with integrity, respect your competitors, listen to your coaches, and give your very best in every event. Win with humility, and if you face challenges, meet them with courage and determination,” said Mkwala to the 68 athletes some of whom were accompanied by their parents at the event held at Townsend High School.
Mkwala said sport teaches valuable life lessons like teamwork, perseverance, discipline and leadership. “Carry these values with you both on and off the field. Let your conduct reflect the excellence that Bulawayo Province stands for.”
He praised the boys and girls who will be competing in both track and field activities that being in the team was due recognition to the hard work, sacrifice and resilience. Teachers and coaches’ tireless efforts were also recognised by the senior Ministry of Education officer.
“You carry with you not only your personal dreams, but also the pride of your schools, your families and our entire province. This is a moment you have worked for, and we are incredibly proud of each one of you.
To the coaches and teachers, thank you for your tireless efforts in nurturing and guiding these athletes. Your commitment has shaped not only skilled sportspeople, but responsible young citizens,” said Mkwala.
Parents and guardians also came in for some mention.
Cain Ncube, the Bulawayo Metropolitan headmaster in charge, said they decided to leave on Monday so that they would have Tuesday to acclimatise and get to the track and have a feel of it.
He said all had been put into a better showing this year.
The competition starts on Wednesday and ends on Thursday.
The best performing athletes will be drafted into the team for the regional schools games.
