Bulawayo Bomber takes jibe at US opponent

SOUTH Africa-based Zimbabwean heavyweight boxer Elvis Moyo has taken a dig at American Eddie Chambers for pulling out of a non-title fight a week before their scheduled bill.

The former World Boxing Federation (WBF) Africa heavyweight champion questioned how Chambers, who had been preparing for the bill that was supposed to be held in Namibia on Saturday “suddenly discovered issues with his passport.”

Moyo, who had been hoping to get back on world boxing’s rankings having gone for three years without a fight, felt that Chambers chickened out and used the passport excuse to postpone the fight.

Known by his stage name “Bulawayo Bomber”, Moyo who has gone for three years without setting his foot inside the ring, having last fought in May 2019, losing by a unanimous judges’ decision to Arnold Gjergjaj of Switzerland took a risk to agree to fight Chambers three weeks before the scheduled bill.

Moyo signed his contract for the fight against Chambers on October 23 in Johannesburg.

“I am scary. Not only Africa has cakes. This one has been working for two months and a week before the fight he says he has passport issues. I don’t buy the story, but such has been the story of my life as most heavyweight boxers are afraid to fight me,” said Moyo.

Chambers, through Lion Heart Boxing Productions’ chief finance officer Edward Mendy wrote on November 5, seven days before his scheduled fight with Moyo that his passport has less than six months before it expires and as such, he cannot travel to Africa.

Chambers, whose status on boxrec.com reads “inactive” just like Moyo’s, offered to trade leather with the Zimbabwean pugilist on December 17 or in January next year.

A rundown on boxrec indicates that Chambers is set to fight Tyler Canning on December 3, an indication that the former might have taken a decision to cancel Moyo’s fight to avoid picking up an injury. – @ZililoR
