BULAWAYO is set for a powerful blend of sport, legacy and national reflection when the Joshua Nkomo Peace Marathon roars into life this morning, with organisers declaring their readiness for the landmark event.

Thousands of runners, fitness enthusiasts and community members are expected to converge on the National University of Science and Technology (Nust), the start and finishing point of the race, in what promises to be more than just a test of endurance.

Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) chairperson Watson Madanyika has given a firm assurance that all systems are in place for a smooth and successful marathon.

Madanyika said the organising team has worked tirelessly to ensure every detail, from route logistics to athlete welfare, has been meticulously addressed.

“We are fully prepared for this event. All the necessary arrangements have been completed, including the route, security, medical support and coordination with key stakeholders,” said Madanyika.

“We are expecting a high turnout, and everything has been put in place to ensure that participants and spectators have a safe and enjoyable experience.”

The marathon, organised by the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Restoration Project Trust in partnership with Nust, is designed to celebrate the life and legacy of Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, a towering figure in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and a symbol of unity and reconciliation.

Beyond the race itself, the event carries a deeper national message, promoting peace, healthy living and social cohesion at a time when communities are seeking renewed purpose and direction.

Participants will compete across various categories, including the 5km fun run, 10km, 21km half marathon and the full 42,2km marathon, catering for both elite athletes and social runners. The race has also attracted attention as a qualifier for the globally recognised Comrades Marathon, adding a competitive edge for top athletes.

“This is a marathon with a purpose. It’s about bringing people together, promoting fitness and honouring a legacy that continues to guide us as a nation,” said Madanyika.

The route will take participants past key landmarks in Bulawayo linked to Nkomo’s life, turning the race into a moving tribute that blends sport with history and identity.

With over 3 000 participants expected and significant prize money on offer, all eyes will be on Bulawayo this weekend as the city hosts an event that promises to leave a lasting impact both on and off the road.
