HELL broke loose in Iminyela when a 25-year-old Bulawayo man turned his car into a weapon — mowing down his neighbour and launching a brutal assault that left the victim hospitalised and disfigured!
Ashley Sibanda will now spend time behind bars after he pleaded guilty to assault and attempted vehicular harm in a dramatic case that shocked the Western Commonage Court.
He was slapped with a 24-month jail sentence by regional magistrate Mrs Sibongile Marondedze — though part of the sentence was suspended if he keeps his fists and wheels to himself for the next five years.
The shocking attack took place on 10 February 2025, when Sibanda spotted his neighbour, Mr Believe Mbedzi, standing by the roadside. Prosecutor Ms Christina Manyika said Sibanda deliberately drove his car into Mbedzi — all because of an alleged insult.
“Upon seeing Mr Mbedzi, Sibanda ran over him, claiming that he had insulted him and the other accused, Thembelihle Sibanda, who is still at large,” Ms Manyika told the court.
But the horror didn’t stop there.
Sibanda and his accomplice jumped out of the car and started slapping the injured man — all while the car’s front tyre remained lodged on Mbedzi’s right foot.
“They continued assaulting him while the tyre was still crushing his foot,” said Ms Manyika.
Sibanda and his friend left Mbedzi lying in agony on the road. He was later rushed to Mpilo Hospital with a broken foot and facial injuries.
In her ruling, Mrs Marondedze said the court took into account the “health problems and financial loss” caused by Sibanda’s “reckless and violent” actions. The court also ordered Sibanda to pay US$380 compensation and complete 480 hours of community service.
Through his lawyer, Mr Tinashe Dzipe, Sibanda claimed he was provoked — but admitted to the assault.
