Bulawayo businessman goes into hiding

A BULAWAYO family has raised alarm over the safety of their relative, local businessman Manuel Phiri, who reportedly went into hiding after being accused of using his printing business to produce campaign material for the opposition.

Phiri, of New Lobengula suburb in Bulawayo, owns a small internet café and printing shop which services residents, students and informal traders in the area.

In an interview, a relative who declined to be named for security reasons said the family last had direct contact with Phiri several days ago after he expressed fear for his safety.

“He told us that he felt threatened and unsafe. He said some people were accusing him of working with the opposition because of the printing services he offers at his shop. Since then he has gone into hiding and we are very worried,” said the relative.

According to the family, Phiri confided that the situation escalated when four men who allegedly identified themselves as members of the National Youth Service visited his business premises.

“He said the men accused him of producing opposition campaign material and demanded that he prove his loyalty by joining the National Youth Service. He felt intimidated because they were aggressive,” the relative said.

The relative further alleged that the confrontation turned violent.

“He told us they attacked him, called him a traitor and warned him that he would face consequences if he continued ‘working with the opposition’. That is when he decided it was no longer safe to remain at home or at his business.”

Neighbours in the area confirmed that Phiri’s shop has remained closed for several days, raising concern among customers who rely on the services.

The family appealed for authorities to investigate the matter and ensure Phiri’s safety.

“All we want is for him to be safe and for the truth to come out. He is just a businessman offering printing services to anyone who walks in. We are appealing for protection and for the matter to be properly looked into,” the relative said.

Police could not immediately comment on the matter last night.
