The Bulawayo Children’s Choir has dedicated its latest single, “Awu Yeiye”, to the memory of veteran broadcaster Babongile Sikhonjwa, affectionately known as the “Ndebele Rockstar”.
Sikhonjwa, who died on September 21, 2025, at the age of 49, was a beloved radio personality, celebrated for his quick wit, magnetic presence, and unwavering support for the arts.
According to the choir’s creative director, Trevor Mawaka, the song was originally composed during Heroes Week to honour fallen musical icons.
“Initially, we did the song to remember fallen musical heroes during the Heroes period because it seems people usually forget that musicians are heroes in their own way as well. However, Sikhonjwa’s passing moved us to include him as one of the individuals we wanted to celebrate,” Mawaka said.
He recalled Sikhonjwa’s special connection to the choir, noting that he was one of the first broadcasters to play their music on Star FM, giving them national exposure.
“We’ll never forget that. He was very encouraging both on the programme and on the project. He always shared uplifting messages. In Bulawayo, he was one of those rare people who genuinely loved the arts and supported others so that they could grow,” said Mawaka.
The choir is set to perform “Awu Yeiye” at the Intwasa Arts Festival KoBulawayo’s Book Day, in tribute to Sikhonjwa and other departed musical heroes, including Calvin Nhliziyo, Taku Mafika, and Sam Mtukudzi. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
